Addis Earl
Haines
Mar 30, 1936 — Jan 13, 2018
Addis Earl Haines, age 81, passed away peacefully at his home near Bertram, Texas, surrounded by his family, on Saturday, January 13, 2018.
He was born on March 30, 1936 in Camp San Saba, Texas to James Joseph Haines and Margret Rachel (Turner) Haines. He was born at "Camps" while his mother was visiting her sister, Lois (Turner) Jones. His family was living in Glascock County at that time where his father was a farmer. At the age of five, Addis, his parents, and two brothers moved to a small ranch just outside of London, Texas, which was purchased by their father.
Addis attended school at London, participating in many types of sports, including six-man football and basketball. In the summers, he played in baseball leagues. When he graduated in 1954, he was named top-ranking boy of his class (There were four students in the class, one boy and three girls. One of the girls was his future wife, Ruth, being valedictorian). Following graduation he apprenticed under his uncle, William Earl Haines, in Killeen, Texas, where he learned all about the boot and shoe repair business. In November of 1954, he married his high school sweetheart, Ruth Morgan and they lived in Killeen, Texas for the next five years before moving to Burnet on Thanksgiving Day in 1959. After moving to Burnet, Addis bought a boot and shoe repair business from another one of his uncles, Alvie Haines. He ran the Haines Boot & Shoe Repair on the square in downtown Burnet for the next forty years. After he semi-retired in 1999, he moved "the shoe shop" to their property outside of town, where he operated the business for several more years. Addis also worked at Lone Star Industries for a time and then as a line-man helper for the City of Burnet for ten years, in addition to running his boot and shoe repair shop.
Addis enjoyed guns and shooting game, often driving back to the family home place in London to hunt. He became a member of the Burnet Gun Club, participating in many of their matches. When Addis's mother died in 1968, he and his father purchased a small ranch east of Burnet. There, he and Ruth raised their four children, teaching them the value of work hard, discipline, and to honor God. Addis was always very involved with many of the extra-curricular activities of both his children and grandchildren. He was a member of the Burnet Booster Club, coached Little League for several years, and could often be seen "running the chains" at the local football games. In addition to many other activities, he supported the annual Burnet County rodeo and the 4-H Club.
In 1951, when he was fifteen, Addis came to understand the Gospel of Christ and received Him as Lord. Not long after this, he began to take his sweetheart, Ruth, to the London Baptist Church, where she too came to know Christ. After their marriage, they joined the First Baptist Church in Killeen. When they moved to Burnet, they joined First Baptist, where they worshipped each Lord's Day and taught a children's Sunday School class together. He also actively served as an usher, greeter, and encourager. They have been faithful members for the last 59 years.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ruth Morgan; their four children: Rebecca Ann Garza (and husband, Robert), Paul Curtis Haines (and wife, Emily), David William Haines (and wife, Rychie), and Timothy Addis Haines (and wife, Jennifer); along with ten grandchildren: Joshua Ray Haines (and wife, Rebecca), Robert Esteban Garza, Amanda Nicole Buckner (and husband, Chad), Carla Jean Haines, Katherine Grace Duggins (and husband, Phillip), Kristin Hope Garza, Rachel Elizabeth Haines, Sarah Ruth Haines, Benjamin Paul Haines, and Heather Morgan Haines; and three great-grandchildren: Hoyt Wayne Buckner, Forrest Hudson Buckner, and Madelyn Ray Haines.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Margaret Rachel and James Joseph Haines; two brothers: James Washington (J.W.) Haines and Thomas Jerry Haines; one infant daughter and one granddaughter, Amber Kay Haines, and one infant great granddaughter, Hailey Kay Haines.
The visitation for Addis will be Wednesday, January 17, 2018 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Clements-Wilcox Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, January 18, 2018 at 2:00 PM, at the First Baptist Church, Burnet. Interment will follow at Lakeland Hills Memorial Park in Burnet.
